That's why the RI Blood Center is teaming up with 4 local breweries for the month of August to encourage Rhode Islanders to donate more blood!
Did you know, that a typical blood donation is 1 pint, which can then save up to 3 lives!!
According to Kara LeBlanc, manager of marketing communications at the RI Blood Center, summer is such a difficult time to get donors because of the wonderful beach days we have, vacations (maybe less in 2020), camping etc.
While you still can have fun during the summer, it's still a great idea to donate blood!
Our social media manager here at SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island says her dad donates every time he can! (Which is every 8 weeks)...that's a lot of lives helped.
When you donate blood it is used to
Help women and children if there are complications during childbirth
Those undergoing chemo or other cancer treatments
People who have suffered severe injuries
People who suffer from kidney, heart, and sickle cell diseases.
Did you know that the sun's ultraviolet rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes? It's important to check the UV index in your area before heading out, you can check for your area by clicking here.
So what exactly are UVA and UVB rays?
UVA rays are the most damaging to the skin. UVB rays play the biggest roles in causing skin cancers.
UVA Rays
Higher wavelength
Penetrate more skin than UVB rays
Can cause indirect damage to DNA
Can penetrate windows and clouds
UVB Rays
Shorter wavelengths
Damages the outer layers of the skin
Directly causes damage to DNA
Can't penetrate windows and can be filtered by clouds
When are UV rays the strongest?
UV exposure is the highest between 10am and 4pm. According to Healthline.com, during this time, the sun's rays have less distance to cover, making them more powerful.
It's important to protect yourself from the sun's strong UV rays to prevent any skin damage. You can reduce the risk of skin damage by hanging out in shady, cool areas and applying suncreen before sun exposure. Whenever possible, you should wear long sleeved shirts and long pants. Wearing darker colored clothing may offer more protection than wearing light colored clothing in the sun. If wearing long clothing is impractical for the situation, be sure to have a shirt on or some other sort of covering to limit sun exposure. Wearing a hat that shades your face, ears, and back of the neck is the best extra sun protection you could have. Avoid wearing hats made from straw or any with holes, though.
Don't forget! Protecting your eyes is JUST as important as protecting your skin from the sun, don't forget your sunglasses!

The church is also involved in other community organizations.
Some of the organizations the members of the church volunteer(ed) at include:
Community Against Bullying in Schools

Lincoln PD sporting facial hair for the first time!
The Lincoln, RI police department are sporting facial hair for the first time to support a local charity!
The donations from the officers support the 5th annual Home Base No Shave campaign by the Red Sox Foundation and Mass. General Hospital. This campaign helps veterans and their families impacted by PTSD and other wounds veterans carry from their time serving.
The officers donated $50, that is matched by the police union Local 435. There is normally a restriction on facial hair for the officers.
For the female officers, they are allowed to paint their nails or wear their hair in a braid with their $50 donation.
The facial hair encourages conversation and breaks stigmas associated with the wounds veterans carry home with them.
On December 4, Lincoln PD and other participating first responders from the New England area will attend a shave-off event at Fenway Park.
According to the Valley Breeze, Lincoln has raised upwards of $1,300 as of November 13th.
For more information on the Home Base No Shave campaign click here.

There is no charge if you come with insurances like Blue Cross, United, Medicare Part B, Neighborhood and Tufts. With no insurance it will cost $25 to get your flu shot. Getting the flu shot will ensure you and your loved ones are safe this flu season. Vaccinations have been proven effective for protecting yourself, your children, and loved ones. Germs spread quickly and you never know what could happen. Get your flu shot too, because according to the CDC, it takes about 2 weeks post-vaccination for your body to develop anti-bodies to protect against the virus. They also recommend to get the vaccine by the end of October, but even doing so after could be beneficial.

SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island's Stormy and Blaze love the game of golf - if they weren't SERVPRO heroes, they probably would've been golfers!
SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island is the Official Cleanup and Restoration Company of the PGA Tour, and we're really proud of that. Today we wanted to tell you a little backstory on Pro Golfer Nate Lashley. Most recently, he won his first PGA title.
Nick's story is an inspiring one. He's faced so much adversity but prevailed and continues to play golf and love the game. While playing golf, his parents and college sweetheart, Leslie flew down to see him. After the game, he saw his family, and then they left. The next day, he hadn't heard from his parents or girlfriend. A couple of days passed, with no word as to where they were, and he was getting worried. It was at this time that he received horrifying news. His parents and girlfriend died in a plane crash due to inclement weather conditions over the state of Wyoming.
Unable to really deal with the crash emotionally, he quit golfing in 2012 and got a job in commercial real estate. He realized he loved golfing and that he could not give up on it, so he began playing again.
SERVPRO supports the PGA Tour and admires the hard work and dedication of pro-golfers. Nate's story is just one of many inspiring stories of athletes who overcame challenging times and still remains a champion.

Port Bond Helps Position Quonset, R.I. for Wind Energy Jobs
Quonset Business Park is Rhode Island’s leader for job growth and economic development. Home to over 200 companies and nearly 12,000 jobs, its Port of Davisville is one of the Top 10 auto importers in North America.
Last week’s announcements by Massachusetts and Rhode Island about off-shore wind projects, and the jobs they may create all along the southern New England coast, highlight the importance of Gov. Raimondo’s 2016 port bond. The proposal, overwhelmingly approved by the voters, will finance $50 million of a $90 million effort to modernize and expand Pier 2, enhancing its load bearing capacity and creating a third berth for cargo. At 16 acres, Pier 2 is similar in size to the 21 acre New Bedford marine terminal. (Pier 1 provides an additional 7 acres of berthing space.)
“Governor Raimondo‘s port bond positions Quonset, and Rhode Island, for continued growth at the Port of Davisville, and to support the state’s growing wind energy industry,“ said Steven J. King, managing director of the Quonset Development Corporation.
The initial $18 million phase of construction on Pier 2 is expected to begin this summer.
Stop the 77! When thinking of dog bites, most people vision a big scary strange dog, growling and bearing teeth. 77% of the time, dog bites come from a family or friends dog. Since most bites come from dogs that your children know, how do we protect them? How do we keep our dogs and children safe? Education!
The one central theme is respect - teaching kids what dogs really like, what they don't like, and when they just need a break! Although they're amazing at dealing with what a family can throw their way, dogs still need your help. Kids can sometimes be scary to dogs because they are KIDS - more unpredictable, more unruly, more uncoordinated and way more likely to get in a dog's face than most adults. To keep them safe, it's your job to watch and listen. Dogs use their whole bodies to show you how they're feeling. If families can learn to listen to what their dogs are communicating, we can better understand their wants and needs.
Make sure the dogs around your kids are ALWAYS comfortable. Be a hero and at the first sign that they're not - give them a break! Move your child far enough away so that the dog can relax again. After all, if no one is there to protect dogs, they're left with no choice but to protect themselves - and that's something no one wants!
Child & Dog Safety Tips
Dogs don't like kisses and hugs! Instead, have your child pet from collar bone to base of tail.
When the pets are eating or sleeping - give them space!
Kids should always be the "good guys." Taking things away from a dog is a job for adults.
Dogs are not toys. They should never be part of "dress up," ridden like a horse, tugged, or pulled. Respect their bodies and their space.
Keep your pets and family safe! For more info and fun educational videos your kids will love, head over to www.stopthe77.com
The American Red Cross continues to help people impacted by Hurricane Harvey while preparing to respond to Florida and the Southeast as powerful Hurricane Irma nears the United States and its territories. Hurricane Irma is the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record. People in the potential path of the storm should monitor weather reports and prepare accordingly.
The Red Cross has robust disaster response capabilities, which allow the organization to respond to two significant disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma without compromising assistance to those in need.
Though the rain has stopped falling in Texas and Louisiana, river and bayou flooding continues. Officials estimate as many as 135,000 homes may be impacted with more than 22,000 homes receiving major damage. In some areas, people are just beginning to clean up their flooded homes. The Red Cross is doing everything it can to get help where it’s needed. Access to many areas remains challenging but the Red Cross is expanding its reach into more communities every day. The Red Cross is working around the clock to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
More than 16,000 people sought refuge in 90 Red Cross and partner shelters across Texas. The Red Cross is also assisting the Louisiana state government with emergency shelters. Even now, more than 3,100 Red Cross disaster workers have helped:
Along with its partners, serve more than 906,000 meals and snacks;
Provide care by supporting 26,000 mental health and health services contacts;
Distribute more than 194,000 relief items like diapers and comfort kits that contain deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other hygiene items for people forced from their homes; and
Mobilize more than 190 emergency response vehicles to help deliver meals and relief supplies.
The American Red Cross is mounting a massive response as Irma heads to the United States. Red Cross workers are hard at work on many island nations throughout the storm’s path and, with Irma bearing down on Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the American Red Cross is already there helping.
Hurricane Irma is currently a Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph winds. The storm has cut access to some islands and others may face similar challenges. In Florida, evacuations are underway and the National Guard has been activated. People are lining up for gas, making arrangements for disaster supplies, and getting their homes ready.
To prepare for Hurricane Irma, the American Red Cross has:
Mobilized relief materials through Florida and the mid-Atlantic region.
Staged responders in nearby areas so they may respond quickly.
Planned to have the resources to shelter more than 120,000 people.
Activated 80 emergency response vehicles.
Prepositioned 100,000 shelf-stable meals.
Even as The Red Cross continues to operate shelters, serve meals, and provide critical relief supplies in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey, some people have returned home and need assistance. The Red Cross will work with individuals and families to help them recover. The Red Cross will help residents start the recovery process by connecting them to needed services and resources. In some cases, the Red Cross may provide financial assistance.
Recovering from a disaster can be a challenging, emotionally draining and complicated process. Each community and each family will have different needs, and will require different support to meet those needs. Red Cross caseworkers connect one-on-one with people to create recovery plans, navigate paperwork and locate help from other agencies.
The Red Cross works with government and nonprofit partners to help develop coordinated community recovery plans and strategies. In some situations, the Red Cross may give grants to partner organizations for specialized activities such as mold remediation or building storm shelters. Our recovery support could also include preparedness activities so people and communities are ready for the next emergency.

SERVPRO Expands PGA Sponsorship with PGA Fantasy Golf
Esmond, RI (Grassroots Newswire) March 22, 2017 - There is an old adage: “It never rains on a golf course.” As the official cleanup and restoration company of the PGA TOUR, SERVPRO® knows this isn’t true, but rain or shine, fans follow their favorite players’ performance at PGA golf tournaments throughout the season. Recognizing the ever-growing popularity of the game, SERVPRO has expanded its relationship with the PGA TOUR by becoming the presenting sponsor of the PGA Fantasy Golf games, available at pgatour.com/fantasy.
“We know people don’t associate SERVPRO with the wide-open spaces and fair weather feeling of a golf course. After all, SERVPRO is the company you turn to when the unexpected, even the unthinkable, happens to your home or business,” says Don McKendall, owner of SERVPRO® of Northern Rhode Island. “But each SERVPRO business is also a local business, there to support the community in good times and bad. Teaming up with the PGA TOUR as the sponsor of their Fantasy Golf Suite helps us build connections within our local community. We want local home and business owners to know that we are there for them ready to respond at a moment’s notice if things go wrong.”
The new “One & Done” games were launched on January 3, 2017*, but the game structure allows players to join in on the fun at any point during the current season. Each week, game players select one player to earn points for them in that week’s tournament. The PGA Tour Fantasy game is based on accumulated FedEx Cup points and the PGA Tour Champions game is based on accumulated Charles Schwab Cup points. A player may select a given golfer for a tournament in each of the One & Done games only once in each season. Since some tournaments earn a pro golfer more points than others, game strategy is based on selecting the right golfers for the right tournaments.
“With the first major tournament of the season—The Masters—just around the corner, now is a great time to start your One & Done game for this year’s tour,” says McKendall. “If you ‘master’ the trick of choosing the right golfers in the right tournaments, you could jump to the top of your Fantasy league.” The top finisher in the PGA TOUR game will win a new set of golf clubs, while the top prize for the PGA TOUR Champions game is a trip for two to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, November 6-12.
SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. For more information on SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, please contact Don McKendall at (401) 949-9955 or don@SERVPROmckendall.com.

Quonset Development Corporation, in North Kingstown, hosted an E-Waste Recycling Event to benefit Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island. Did you know? Goodwill Industries of RI has partnered with Dell to become one of their 2,220 “Reconnect” computer recycling sites across the nation. The agency is the only “Reconnect” site in Rhode Island and expects to recycle between 600,000 pounds of e-waste annually and create green jobs locally.
Steven King, Managing Director of the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) was honored by the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council (RIPEC) for his distinguished career in public service. King was awarded the prestigious Gary S. Sasse Distinguished Public Service Award at RIPEC's 73rd Annual Meeting held at the Rhode Island Convention Center. "Under Steven King's tenure at Quonset, the former Naval facility has undergone an incredible transformation of job growth and economic development," said John C. Simmons, executive director of RIPEC. "Steve has worked tirelessly over the years to make Quonset Business Park the nationally-recognized engine of economic success that it is today and he is one of the most dedicated public servants we have in Rhode Island." The Sasse Award is given in the name of RIPEC's former executive director, a staunch advocate of public service. Several nominees were reviewed by the Selection Committee based on the following qualifications: sustained superior performance in the service of the Rhode Island taxpayer; fiscal responsibility and business acumen; record of integrity and devotion to public service; personal initiative and resourcefulness; and overall diligence and productivity of his career.

The Fourth of July is a time where we all gather with our families, kick back and relax the beauty of our great nation. When celebrating, we would like each and every one of you to have fun, but to also be careful at the same time. When dealing with fireworks, sparklers, or anything else that has the potential to cause harm if mishandled, the American Red Cross has come up with a few safety guidelines to adhere to so that accidents are at a minimum this holiday.
Where to view fireworks from
The safest way to enjoy fireworks it to attend a public fireworks display put on by professionals. Stay at least 500 feet away. If however, you choose to put on a display of fireworks from your home, here are a few safety steps to follow:
Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging
Keep a supply of water close by a precaution
Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection
Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud”
Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets
Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials
Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks
SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island would like to extend our congratulations to the 2016 U.S. Open Champion, Dustin Johnson. Each member of our SERVPRO family watched anxiously as Johnson overcame a deficit to become the eventual winner by three strokes. A native of Columbia, South Carolina, this major championship marks his first major win in his career since turning professional in 2007.
The Controversy
On the 5th hole of the final round, as Johnson was lining up his putt, his golf ball seemed to rock back and forth, a movement subject to penalty if Johnson was the cause of it. For 7-holes, the United States Golf Association (USGA), did not count this as a penalty against Johnson. On the 12th hole, however, a rules official informed Johnson that he was subject to a video review once the round was over. Since this was a close final round in general, the implications regarding the one-stroke penalty could have been a detriment to his performance. Luckily, Johnson won by enough strokes that when the round was over, the one-stroke penalty did not rob him of his victory.
SERVPRO is a national sponsor for the American Red Cross “Ready Rating” Program. This free, web-based program, is designed to help businesses, organizations, and schools become better prepared for emergencies. The Red Cross Ready Rating Program allows individuals to assess their readiness for a disaster, so they can take all of the necessary steps before disaster strikes to protect their property from damage and loss.
"This partnership just makes perfect sense," said Rick Isaacson, Executive Vice President of SERVPRO Industries, Inc., "and truly completes the readiness equation for businesses and other property owners. The Red Cross Ready Rating Program allows individuals to assess their readiness for a disaster, so they can take all necessary steps before disaster strikes to protect their property from damage and loss. But, when disaster does strike, knowing what to do and who to call saves time – and fast response is key to minimizing damage and downtime. That’s where SERVPRO’s Emergency READY Program can help. Together, these two programs offer maximum peace of mind to businesses and other organizations."
"Through the generosity of SERVPRO, the Red Cross will help empower workplaces to re-open more quickly after natural or man-made disasters such as water main breaks, medical emergencies, power outages, tornadoes, floods and hurricanes, through the Ready Rating Program," said Tom Heneghan, manager of Business Continuity Programs for Red Cross.
"Up to 40% of businesses never re-open their doors after such disasters; SERVPRO’s partnership will enable more businesses, schools, and organizations to become better prepared. We are excited to have SERVPRO join us in community outreach efforts to educate and highlight the importance of community preparedness in neighborhoods across the country."
