Common Causes of Household Fires

9/12/2024 (Permalink)

Household fires are a serious concern for homeowners, and they can happen when you least expect them. While cooking, or an unnoticed faulty wire can lead to devastating consequences. In this blog post, we'll explore the most common causes of household fires and the risks they pose.

1. Cooking Fires

Cooking is the leading cause of house fires, accounting for nearly half of all residential fires. Grease fires, unattended pots, or overheated appliances can quickly escalate into a blaze.

2. Electrical Fires

Electrical fires can be caused by faulty wiring, overloaded circuits, or malfunctioning appliances. These types of fires often occur behind walls or in attics, making them difficult to detect until it’s too late.

3. Heating Equipment Fires

Space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves are common sources of household fires, especially during the colder months. Improper use or maintenance of these heating sources can lead to dangerous fires.

4. Smoking Materials

Careless smoking is a significant cause of household fires, particularly when cigarettes are not properly extinguished or are smoked in bed.

5. Candle Fires

Candles add ambiance to a home, but they can also be a fire hazard if left unattended or placed near flammable objects.

6. Barbecue and Outdoor Fire Hazards

Grills and outdoor fire pits are great for entertainment, but they can pose serious fire risks if not handled correctly.

Household fires can happen unexpectedly, but many are preventable with proper precautions and awareness.

Electrical Fires | East Greenwich, RI

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

Home fires that involve electrical failures or malfunctions are responsible for an average of 440 deaths per year.

Home fires that involve lighting equipment were responsible for 490 deaths between 2012 and 2016

According to the National Fire Protection Agency:

You CAN prevent a home electrical fire!

Although most electrical fires start behind your East Greenwich home's walls, if you know what signs to look for, you can prevent a fire!

Keep your eye out for old wiring and receptacles. Especially if you already know they are old and need to be replaced, call a licensed electrician to ensure your home is up to code.

Electrical fires - how do they start?

As stated above, most home fires start with faulty, old wiring or equipment and fixtures. According to the NFPA, most home electrical fires are caused by something called arcing.

Arc faults are caused by damaged wires and/or connectors. With time, minimally damaged electrical elements will become more and more worn, generating heat and breaking down the wiring insulation, ultimately causing a fire.

Keep your eye on your sockets and outlets, too! Older receptacles can also cause fires.

Fire Facts and Tips

It's very important that you have smoke (and carbon monoxide) detectors in your home. It can save you and your families lives.

Ensure that there are smoke alarms in each bedroom that is slept in, outside the room, and alarms on every level of your East Greenwich home.

According to the NFPA, there were no smoke alarms present in 2 out of every 5 home fire deaths...

Did you know, a closed door can help slow the spread of fire and smoke?

If you experience a home electrical fire while you (or a family member) is home and awake, use your ABC fire extinguisher  to extinguish the fire (if it is of size to deal with using an extinguisher). Be sure to call 9-1-1 before you attempt to extinguish it. (This goes for any size fire) This is just incase the fire gets out of control.

After the flames are out, the firefighters are gone, and everyone is safe, call SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island at 401-949-9955, we are here to help restore and cleanup after fire damage. Most of the time, with fire damage, also comes water damage, and we're experts at water damage restoration, too!

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Fourth Of July firework safety Be sure to always have water or a fire extinguisher near by when you're having a fire, using fireworks, or cooking!

The Fourth of July is this weekend! What do you think of when you hear that? Fireworks, cookout (social distance of course) and gathering around the fire with some s'mores all come to mind for us!

When fire is involved in any way, it's important for you and everyone around to be safe!

Grilling safety

You can check out our blog on grilling safety here, but in short:

- Place your grill away from any decks, awnings, and tree branches.

- NEVER EVER leave your grill unattended while it is lit.

- Keep your grill clean, according to the NFPA, 1 out of every 5 grill fires was a grill that was not clean.

- Be sure there are no children running around the grilling area. You can tell them it's an "adult only zone"

- NEVER use a grill in the garage, under a canopy, or anywhere enclosed. This can cause a carbon monoxide build up which can be fatal.

Firework safety

- NEVER light fireworks indoors

- Never use fireworks if you are under the influence of alcohol

- Light them away from any trees, bushes, houses and any other flammable materials

- Never ignite fireworks inside of a container

- Soak used fireworks in water after using them to prevent any risk of fire

- Always be sure fireworks are legal in your area!

Fire safety

- Only build a fire in contained areas

- Clear the area around the fire pit so there are no papers, leaves, or any other flammable materials

- Never leave a fire unattended

- Keep a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water close by

- When putting out the fire, be sure it is completely out before heading in for the night

- After about 24 hours, the ashed can be dampened, cooled, and put into a metal container just for ashes

Indoor and Outdoor fireplace safety for Cranston

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

During the summer and fall months, we all love to enjoy a nice fire with our friends and family (socially distanced of course) and some s'mores! While in the winter, some of us enjoy a nice fire in the fireplace inside. However you enjoy your fires, it's important that you are safe!

Indoor fireplaces/pellet/ wood stoves

Be sure your chimney and stove (if you have one) is inspected and cleaned by a chimney specialist once a year to ensure there is no creosote build up and no other issues. Keep the area around the fireplace clean and clear of any fire hazards. This can include decorations, tripping hazards, and any other flammable materials.

ALWAYS

  • Ensure the flue is open before igniting a fire
  • Use fireplace gloves when adjusting the doors or screens
  • Close the damper when the fire is completely out
  • Control your fire

Outdoor fires

While most of us enjoy sitting outside by the fire with friends and family, enjoying a beautiful summer or fall night, it is always important to remember and be aware of safety and any hazards.

  • Always use a designated fire pit
  • Keep water nearby
  • Never use a flammable liquid to start a fire
  • Don't wear flowy clothing around a fire, always wear snug fit or short sleeved clothes.
  • After you've had your fun around the fire, be sure the fire is doused with water and is fully extinguished.

Whether you're enjoying a campfire outside or warming up by the fire inside, always be sure you're practicing proper safety measures!

SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island is here to help you with any fire related damage. Our teams are highly trained to help guide you through the entire process. We'll make it "Like it never even happened."

Preventing fires in your Johnston neighborhood

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

As the warmer weather approaches us, we're thinking about or already grilling! Why not? There's nothing like the smell of food on the grill.

As a matter of fact, click here for a list of yummy looking spring-time grilling recipes!

While grilling is one of life's simple pleasures, with all things fun, there is always a way for something not-so-fun to sneak it's way in there.

Using improper cooking/grilling techniques can cause you a whole lot more than charred burgers.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, grills were the cause of over 8,000 home fires per year.

Whether you prefer a gas powered grill or charcoal, it is important for you to follow safety measures to keep you, your family, home, guests and neighbors safe!

- Place your grill away from any deck railings, away from any awnings or tree branches.

- NEVER leave your grill unattended.

- Be sure you are keeping your grill clean. According to the NFPA, 1 out of every 5 grill fires, the grill was not clean.

- Be sure children know that anywhere near a grill, open flame, or anywhere food is prepared should be a "kid free zone"

- Never use a grill in a garage, under a tent, in a shed or anywhere else enclosed. It could cause carbon monoxide build up.

Gas grills

- Before firing up your gas grill, check the hose for any leaks. You can apply a solution of water and soap on the hose to see if there are any leaks (it will show bubbles)

- If you smell gas while grilling, immediately step away from the grill. Do NOT move the grill on your own. Contact your local fire department if a fire occurs.

- Never start your grill with the lid closed. This could cause the gas to build up and combust when lit.

Charcoal grills

- Charcoal grills can stay hot for hours after you extinguish the flames. Be sure you aren't putting any flammable materials near the grill while it may still be hot. Ensure nothing can be blown into or near the charcoal grill.

- Be sure there are no holes or rust damage to the bottom or sides of the grill. Hot coals can fall out and cause a fire or injury.

- Use proper starter fluid. Do not use lighter fluid or another kind that is not meant for charcoal grills.

- If your flames are too low, try re-ignighting with dry kindling or more charcoal. Avoid using any more fire starting liquid. This could cause serious injury and fire.

We hope you can fire up that grill and cook up some delicious meals for your family, friends, and neighbors this spring/summer. And always be safe while you're doing it!!

If your home was damaged by a grill fire, give us a call at (401) 949-9955, we'll make it "Like it never even happened."

Testing Smoke Alarms and Changing Batteries-Warwick

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

Person changing the battery in their smoke detector Photo: https://www.homestructions.com/electric/smoke-detector-check-test-your-smoke-alarm/

Have you tested your smoke alarms yet this month? Now’s the time if you haven’t already!

You should test your smoke alarms at least once a month, and batteries should be replaced at least once a year.

  • A good way to remind yourself to change the fire alarm batteries is to change them when you change your clocks for daylight savings time.

There are two common types of smoke detectors found in homes:

Battery- powered: monthly testing is crucial with these kinds of detectors. They are susceptible to worn out batteries.

Hardwired: These are powered by your homes electrical system. But they will usually have back-up batteries just in case of an outage. These type of detectors still need to be tested monthly to be sure they are functional.

When you’re testing your detectors:

  • Be sure everyone is aware
  • Have a family member stand at the furthest point away from the alarm. This is to ensure it can be heard from any point in the home.
  • Press and hold the test button, it may take a few seconds to kick on, but a very loud chirping sound will emit once it’s engaged.

Signs you need to replace the batteries: a high pitched chirping noise will be coming from your alarm if the batteries need to be replaced. It’s best to be proactive and change the batteries before they get to this point. If the batteries are no longer good, they wont be able to do their job.

Fire Damage - Harmony

12/4/2019 (Permalink)

Office room damaged by fire Call us to get the job done right!

SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island offers fire damage restoration services. Since each smoke and fire damage situation is unique, each requires a unique solution.

When different materials burn, the soot differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. Here are the steps in our process of a “typical” fire damage restoration.

  1. Emergency contact
  2. Inspection and fire damage assessment
  3. Immediate board-up and roof tarp (if necessary)
  4. Water removal and drying (if needed)
  5. Cleaning and repair
  6. Restoration

After any fire damage to your home or business, the first thing you should focus on is your safety!

Take these into consideration

  • Is it safe to stay inside?
  • Electrical and slip and fall hazards are some of the most common concerns.
  • Wet materials can be very heavy, always use caution when trying to move these materials.

After a fire:

  • Limit the movement in the home to prevent soot from being embedded into carpets and upholstery.
  • If the electricity is off, empty the freezer and refrigerator and prop the doors open.
  • Protect chrome with a light coat of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Change HVAC filter
  • Tape a couple layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What NOT to do after a fire

  • Don’t attempt to wash any walls or carpets, or upholstery without contacting us.
  • Don’t attempt to clean electrical appliances that were damaged by the fire on your own. Contact an authorized repair service.
  • Don’t eat any food that was near the fire or damaged by the fire.
  • Don’t turn on any ceiling fans or lights on, the wiring may be damaged.
  • Don’t send your clothes to an ordinary dry cleaner, find a professional in fire damage cleaning. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor

Call us at (401) 949-9955 if your home or business requires fire damage restoration. We're here to help!

Holiday Decorating Safety

11/19/2019 (Permalink)

Christmas tree decorated Be sure to keep trees away from areas with heavy foot traffic.

As the holidays approach, trees, lights, and candles, among many other decorations, are holiday traditions that millions of homes across the country use to celebrate. There are certain precautions you should take when setting up these decorations to ensure optimal safety for you and your family.

Here are some useful tips:

Trees

  • If you choose a fake tree, make sure you buy one that is fire resistant.
  • If you buy a real tree, be sure the tree is still growing, not already cut.
    • If you purchase a pre-cut tree: make sure it is still healthy.
    • The needles shouldn't come off too easily, and the limbs should be flexible.
  • Place the tree away from any fireplaces and any other heat sources.
  • Make sure the tree is away from where people walk, this may be a tripping hazard.

Lights

  • Use lights that have been tested.
  • If any wires are broken or have loose connections, throw them away.
  • Make sure outdoor lights are secure
  • Don’t plug in more than 3 sets of lights per extension chord.
  • Keep lights out of the reach of children.

Candles

  • Never light a candle on or near a tree.
  • Use candle holders that are non-flammable.
  • Keep away from other decorations.
  • Don't place them in areas where they can easily be knocked over.

Although holiday decorations are not limited to just these three things, you should ensure that any and all types are set up in the safest way.

Here at SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, we want everyone to have the safest holiday possible. We understand how valuable time spent with friends and family is, and we want everyone to have a happy holiday season!

Thanksgiving Fire Safety Tips

11/7/2019 (Permalink)

As Thanksgiving approaches us this month, everyone is thinking about that delicious turkey dinner, and we can't blame you! Although the kitchen is going to be the hub of the home on this day, it is important to keep an eye on what you're cooking and who's around you to ensure you and your families safety.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association:

"Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires...unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths"

These facts are just a reminder of how quickly we can get caught up in the joy of the holidays, while forgetting the importance of safety.

Here are some fire safety tips from the NFPA:

  • Stay home while cooking your turkey
  • Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove while it is being used
  • Keep the floor clear so you won't trip over anything while serving that delicious Thanksgiving dinner or cause any kind of mess.
  • Always make sure your smoke detectors are working properly.

While the adults are cooking the Thanksgiving dinner, the children sometimes can get restless, so we suggest finding them some activities they can do together in another room. Some activities include puzzles or board games, maybe they will even set the table!

Here at SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, we want you and your family to have a happy and safe safe Thanksgiving! We understand that disaster can strike at any moment, and we are here 24/7 to help you and your family make a disaster "Like it never even happened."

Removing Oily Soils in Smithfield, RI

2/18/2019 (Permalink)

Oily soils are removed in different ways. Some oily soils are light enough to be emulsified in water-based detergents. Other oily soils may be too heavy for detergents to be effective in removing them. These heavier soils can be dissolved with oil-based solvents.

Emulsifying Oily Soils with Detergents

Can we put something into water to help us clean oily soils? Yes - detergents! Water-based detergents are able to dissolve in water, but they are also able to attach to oily soils. Detergents pull the oily soils away from the surface, so we can extract the soils with the detergent.

Detergent molecules are made so that they have a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail.

The makeup of the tail of a detergent molecule is similar to the makeup of oil, gasoline, grease, and animal fats. The detergent's tail will dissolve substances similar to grease and oil. The head of the detergent molecule breaks oily soils apart and the head pulls them into the water, creating an emulsion. An emulsion means that the detergent acts as a connecting link between oil and water molecules, allowing them to be mixed evenly through the cleaning solution. The cleaning solution can then be rinsed out along with the emulsified soils.

Detergents have some drawbacks. If they are not rinsed thoroughly, they leave a sticky residue. Also, when detergents combine with hard water (water that contains minerals, such as calcium or magnesium), they make a salt. These salts will not dissolve in water, so they slow down the cleaning action of the detergent and form a scum.

Airborne Smoke Residues - Lincoln, RI

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

A burning fire releases toxic gasses into the air. organic materials produce nitrogen when they burn. Inorganic materials produce sulfur when they burn. Nitrogen and sulfur are hydrocarbons and some hydrocarbons cause cancer. Some of the gasses that make up smoke are quite toxic, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and hydrogen chloride. Once the fire is extinguished, the smoke residues that remain and the airborne particles coming from residues may still be harmful if technicians inhale them.

Steps can be taken to allow technicians to work safely in fire damaged structures. Structures should be ventilated with Fireman's Fans. Odors from smoke residues develop as gasses evaporate from the burned debris into the air. Ventilation removes most of the gasses emitted from debris in the building.

Respirators protect technicians from breathing potentially harmful residues stirred into the air by the work process. Whether a respirator is needed depends on the concentration of residues. A loss site with light smoke residues might be cleaned safely without a respirator. A loss site with heavy, loose residues might cause concentrations of smoke particles to become airborne, thus requiring a respirator. The type of respirator needed (paper filter mask or half-face-piece respirator with HEPA filter) depends on the level of smoke residues. An air scrubber with HEPA filtration will reduce airborne particles concentrations when technicians are cleaning an area with extremely high levels of smoke residues.

Fire Deodorization - Pawtucket, RI

3/27/2018 (Permalink)

One of the worst things about fires in your Pawtucket, RI home or office - even small fires that do relatively little damage - is the odor they leave behind. No matter how many cans of air freshener you use, no matter how many scented candles you light, the stench always seems to come back.

There's a good reason for the lingering smell. More often than not, the source of the odor hasn't been removed. Imagine finding a dead animal in your office building's storage room or in your home's crawlspace. Would you douse the creature in your favorite scented spray and consider the problem solved? Of course not!

Of course not!

From greasy stove fires to smoke damage caused by outdoor wildfires, SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island professionals are trained and certified in fire damage restoration, including advanced deodorization principles.

If you or a customer suffer a fire damage - or some other accident - and require deodorization services, give SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island a call. Whether it's fire, water or mold damage - or even just a stubborn, unpleasant odor that refuses to go away - we'll help make it "Like it never even happened."

Why is that smokey smell so hard to remove?

Smoke odor particles are tiny - in some cases even microscopic in size. They are measured in microns and range in size from .1 (one tenth) of a micron to about 4 microns. Compare a tiny odor particle to a period created by a typewriter (about 150 microns) or to the tip of a human hair (about 75 to 100 microns).

The small size of odor particles allows them to penetrate surfaces easily. Other factors besides size can help smoke odors penetrate materials:

  • Surface Porosity - the more porous a material, the more likely it is to absorb odors.
  • Heavy Concentrations of Residue - the more concentrated the residue, the greater the surface area of materials it can impact.
  • High Exposure Time - the longer a surface is exposed to odor particles, the greater the number of odor particles that will penetrate.
  • Heat - heat causes porous surfaces to expand, allowing odors to penetrate even deeper. When heat is removed, the surfaces contract and trap the odor particles.

Types of Fire Damage, RI

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

Different kinds of damage can occur when structure or contents burn. Of course, many materials are destroyed in the fire, being partially or completely consumed in the combustion process. Beyond that, further damage happens as heat and smoke residues impact the materials. Even more damage occurs as firefighters attempt to extinguish the fire. Water and other extinguishing agents used to fight the fire can actually cause more damage to the building. In reality, a fire damage consists of several kinds of damages. Materials suffer burning, charring, heat damage, smoke damage, and even water damage.

Levels of Fire Damages

Not all fires result in the same level of damage. Not all fire damages require the same type of restoration procedures. Any particular loss could involve a range of damages from minor to major. A description of three levels of fire damage - minor, medium, and major - will provide an idea of the restoration services required to address each level of loss.

Minor Fire Damage

Smoke residues affect only certain rooms or areas. The amount of smoke residues is light to moderate. Restoration may involve dry cleaning and/or wet cleaning of ceilings, walls, floors, and contents. Few areas need to be repainted, and only minor items require replacement.

Medium Fire Damage

The amount of smoke residues is moderate, and more materials require wet cleaning to remove residues. The number of areas requiring repainting and items requiring replacement increase. Floors may need to be refinished. Heat damage to drywall, cabinets, and contents requires more materials to be replaced. Contents might be cleaned at the job site. Smoke odors are noticeable, possibly requiring additional deodorization procedures after cleaning.

Major Fire Damage

Fire and heat damage is severe near the source of the fire. Structural framing and finishes may be charred, requiring structural repairs. Smoke residues are distributed through a large portion of the building, and smoke odors are strong and possibly pungent. Emergency services are needed, such as boarding up the structure, establishing a source of electricity, winterizing the building in cold weather, and removing smoke-filled and charred debris. Restoration will involve extensive cleaning of the structure and probably require restorers to pack and move out all salvageable contents for off-site cleaning. Multiple methods of deodorization are needed to remove smoke odors.

National Weather Service Storm Lighting Myths & Facts

5/12/2016 (Permalink)

Do you know the facts about lightning?

National Weather Service Storm Lighting Myths & Facts

Myth: If you're caught outside during a thunderstorm, you should crouch down to reduce your risk of being struck.

Fact: Crouching doesn't make you any safer outdoors. Run to a substantial building or hard topped vehicle. If you are too far to run to one of these options, you have no good alternative. You are NOT safe anywhere outdoors. See our safety page for tips that may slightly reduce your risk.

Myth: Lightning never strikes the same place twice.

Fact: Lightning often strikes the same place repeatedly, especially if it’s a tall, pointy, isolated object. The Empire State Building is hit nearly 100 times a year.

Myth: If it’s not raining or there aren’t clouds overhead, you’re safe from lightning.

Fact: Lightning often strikes more than three miles from the center of the thunderstorm, far outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud. “Bolts from the blue” can strike 10-15 miles from the thunderstorm.

Myth: Rubber tires on a car protect you from lightning by insulating you from the ground.

Fact: Most cars are safe from lightning, but it is the metal roof and metal sides that protect you, NOT the rubber tires. Remember, convertibles, motorcycles, bicycles, open-shelled outdoor recreational vehicles and cars with fiberglass shells offer no protection from lightning. When lightning strikes a vehicle, it goes through the metal frame into the ground. Don't lean on doors during a thunderstorm.

Myth: A lightning victim is electrified. If you touch them, you’ll be electrocuted.

Fact: The human body does not store electricity. It is perfectly safe to touch a lightning victim to give them first aid. This is the most chilling of lightning Myths. Imagine if someone died because people were afraid to give CPR!

Myth: If outside in a thunderstorm, you should seek shelter under a tree to stay dry.

Fact: Being underneath a tree is the second leading cause of lightning casualties. Better to get wet than fried!

Myth: If you are in a house, you are 100% safe from lightning.

Fact: A house is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm as long as you avoid anything that conducts electricity. This means staying off corded phones, electrical appliances, wires, TV cables, computers, plumbing, metal doors and windows. Windows are hazardous for two reasons: wind generated during a thunderstorm can blow objects into the window, breaking it and causing glass to shatter and second, in older homes, in rare instances, lightning can come in cracks in the sides of windows.

Myth: If thunderstorms threaten while you are outside playing a game, it is okay to finish it before seeking shelter.

Fact: Many lightning casualties occur because people do not seek shelter soon enough. No game is worth death or life-long injuries. Seek proper shelter immediately if you hear thunder. Adults are responsible for the safety of children.

Myth: Structures with metal, or metal on the body (jewelry, cell phones,Mp3 players, watches, etc), attract lightning.

Fact: Height, pointy shape, and isolation are the dominant factors controlling where a lightning bolt will strike. The presence of metal makes absolutely no difference on where lightning strikes. Mountains are made of stone but get struck by lightning many times a year. When lightning threatens, take proper protective action immediately by seeking a safe shelter – don’t waste time removing metal. While metal does not attract lightning, it does conduct it so stay away from metal fences, railing, bleachers, etc.

Myth: If trapped outside and lightning is about to strike, I should lie flat on the ground.

Fact: Lying flat increases your chance of being affected by potentially deadly ground current. If you are caught outside in a thunderstorm, you keep moving toward a safe shelter.

Myth: lightning flashes are 3-4 km apart.

Fact: Old data said successive flashes were on the order of 3-4 km apart. New data shows half the flashes are about 9 km apart. The National Severe Storms Laboratory report concludes: "It appears the safety rules need to be modified to increase the distance from a previous flash which can be considered to be relatively safe, to at least 10 to 13 km (6 to 8 miles). In the past, 3 to 5 km (2-3 miles) was as used in lightning safety education."
