The sump pump will only turn on when the water reaches a specific level. Sump pumps are equipped with floats, like in your cars gas tank, to determine the level of the water.
What causes sump pump failure?
Power outage: a power outage can cause your sump pump to fail or not work properly. In the very unfortunate circumstance of a bad storm + power outage = flooding and failed sump pump.
Stuck switch: this happens when the pump moves around inside the sump pit, and the float will get stuck against the inside of the pump, or other debris causing the float not to properly float.
To fix your float, it's simple, all you need to do is a little bit of cleaning and adjust your pump inside the pit.
Clogged pipe: if the pipes from your sump pump are clogged, water won't be able to flow through, and it will end up right back in your basement. To prevent clogging, install a grate at the opening of the pipe so it can catch any debris.
Old: If your sump pump is older, it won't be working up to par. It's recommended to replace your pump every 10 years to keep it working properly.
Maintenance: Add "clean sump pump" to your seasonal cleaning check list (every season). Keeping up with the maintenance of your sump pump will keep it in working order. To clean up, use a towel to dry the spray foam and place a fan nearby to dry out any other water.
Fiberglass insulation
Since fiberglass insulation is made from glass fibers, they won't absorb water, and if water does intrude, it won't cause much major damage.
But, if water has accumulated in the insulation, it will decrease the functionality of it.
When you're handling fiberglass insulation, be sure to wear gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirts, protective eye wear, and a breathing mask.
Cellulose insulation
Since this kind of insulation is made from plant fibers, they will absorb moisture like a sponge. If the damage is only minimal, you might be able to have the small area removed and replaced or dried.
Foam Board Insulation
Just like spray foam insulation, foam board insulation can repel water and won't host mold or mildew. But, if it does get wet, it will trap moisture in the wall cavity and create an environment for mold and mildew growth.

As the winter is getting closer and closer, frozen pipes become regular occurrences in New England homes. Since water expands in the pipes once it is frozen, the expansion puts pressure on the pipe, this can then cause the pipes to crack and/ or break. This can cause a major problem to your home. Drain water from all pools and sprinkler supply lines.

Moisture meters are an important part of the SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island restoration process. These are used to measure actual moisture in various materials (wooden and non-wooden). There are two types of moisture meters, ones that penetrate the material and ones that do not. There's a relative scale for measuring moisture in non-wood materials. Moisture of non-wood materials is indicated by numbers on a points scale.
Non-Penetrating Moisture Meters
This product is generally used to measure the moisture content in wood materials. It does not penetrate through any materials to cause surface damage. Rather, it uses radio frequency, capacitance, and conductivity. This product is best for indicating high levels of moisture in materials like plaster and dry wall. The danger from using non-penetrating moisture readers is the accuracy. False readings may occur from time to time, like if air gaps between wet materials are present. Non-penetrating meters can indicate moisture fairly deep within the material.
Penetrating Moisture Meters
These have electrical probes that go inside the material to test for moisture. Results are displayed on the device digitally or through analog. This is measured by method of electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of the material that is between the two probes is affected by the presence of water.
Moisture Sensors
This is used to detect moisture in carpets and padding to determine if water has reached the sub-floor – then there’s a problem. The moisture sensors have a probe that penetrate the carpet/padding. This sensor only indicates moisture, but not the amount or severity of it.
Thermo-hydrometers
This device measures the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. This product gets the reading for 5 areas - air in/out of affected area, air outside of structure, HVAC air, and air coming out of the dehumidifier.

If you have been watching the news or residing in Johnston, you're probably aware of the floods occurring and how state officials are working to mitigate it. Officials say the cause of the flooding is a blocked culvert nearby in the woods. The mayor has stated that they do not know who owns that land surrounding the culvert.
Belfield Drive in Johnston was COMPLETELY submerged in water, making it nearly impossible to drive vehicles down that road. The Belfield Drive residents are of course stressed with what's happening at the moment in their neighborhood, and they have to live with anxiety knowing the roads and homes can flood whenever it rains. According to WPRI, citizens were not able to park their cars by their homes like they normally would. Streets are flooded, which has been causing basement flooding for some residents as well.

Plans are in effect with federal and conservation agencies to rectify this issue, since this situation has made driving along roads and living extremely difficult. There was a meeting yesterday (Monday 6/17/2019) at 11:45AM to discuss plans moving forward. Officials are saying that they want to make the flooded road higher. Residents are worried that the solution won't be permanent.
In high school, college, and graduate school, Finals week is the ultimate time for coffee, stress, and anxiety. Students are scurrying to their classes, writing papers, and trying to maintain their sanity.
To make matters even more stressful, a sprinkler burst occurred in a freshman residence hall of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode island. Students who don't live close by or have friends/family nearby must find a place to stay until the hall is repaired and habitable. The University is offering to compensate students for money spent on hotel rooms. Water damage did not affect the entire residence hall, nonetheless it was uninhabitable for students. People needed to evacuate so as not to damage their important belongings or get electrocuted from the outlets.
Due to the stress of this situation, University officials are asking professors to accommodate students who are directly affected by the flooding, like rescheduling exams and due dates for final papers and presentations. As of right now, it has not been disclosed exactly when students will be allowed back in the building. According to officials, students will have the opportunity to go back and retrieve anything they left behind in their dorm rooms, but accompanied by Residence staff. The University said they will work with students to replace any damaged electronics.

The amount of snow and ice your roof can support will depend on a number of factors, including the roof type and the age and condition of the structure. Keep in mind - if more than a foot of heavy, wet snow and ice has accumulated on your roof, you should have it removed by a professional.

An easy way to help snow and ice drain off of your roof is to make sure the area around your downspouts is clear. This can help prevent standing water from collecting near the gutter downspout.
Dealing With Existing Ice Dams
Melt the ice dam
Fill a nylon stocking with calcium chloride ice melt, and place it vertically across the ice dam so that it melts a channel through the dam. If you try this, make sure you can safely position the ice melt on your roof, and make sure to use calcium chloride, not rock salt. Rock salt will damage your roof. Also, be aware that shrubbery and plants near the gutters or downspouts may be damaged.

If you cannot safely reach the roof, avoid using a ladder in snowy and icy conditions. Consider hiring a contractor to remove the ice dam.

If you’ve ever had water pooling on your floors or window sills or even leaking from the ceiling while your roof is covered with snow, you’ve experienced ice dams. They form when snow along the bottom of your roof freezes into one piece with snow packed into your gutter. As the section against the house warms up (from the house’s heat), it melts but is trapped underneath the outer layer of ice exposed to the air. The water then creeps up under the shingles and eventually down inside of the home.
A gutter guard that keeps snow from filling your gutter can also help you avoid ice dams. So can a roof rake; use it to clear away snow in the bottom one to two feet of the roof.
