As the winter is getting closer and closer, frozen pipes become regular occurrences in New England homes. Since water expands in the pipes once it is frozen, the expansion puts pressure on the pipe, this can then cause the pipes to crack and/ or break. This can cause a major problem to your home. To be sure this does not happen to you and your home, once the temperatures drop below freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit) here are some tips:
- Drain water from all pools and sprinkler supply lines.
- Remove, drain and store hoses.
- Be sure to close the inside valves that supply the outdoor hose spouts. Keep the outdoor ones open to allow the remaining water to drain.
- Know where your water supply lines are located in unheated areas of the home. Make sure they are insulated to ensure they don’t freeze.

- Heat tape and cable
- Even using newspaper can help
