Thinking ahead to winter storms | Cranston, RI

While it's only September, as we know, winter in Rhode Island can come in the blink of an eye!
In Cranston, RI, winter storm damage can lead to a bunch of problems in your home if you are caught off guard, not prepared.
Prepare your home
Before a big storm hits, take a look around your home. Clear out any gutters to prevent any dams. Also check for loose shingles that might come up with strong winds.
Trim your trees and shrubs around the home (if possible). Especially if there is a lot of snow expected. Snow and ice can get very heavy once it starts to accumulate. This could cause major damage to your home and other structures on the property.
Clean up any debris and lawn furniture or loose items in your yard. Strong winds can pick them up and they can blow around, potentially leading to damage to your home, even your neighbors home.
It's better for you to be prepared than caught off guard and left with more damage that you could've possibly prevented.
Winter storm damage
Cold weather can lead to a number of damages in your Cranston home. One being frozen/burst pipes. This is something you typically don't need to worry about if you are home and have heat/hot water running during the storm.
Ice dams are also a possible source of damage to your home this winter. If snow builds and builds up on your roof/gutters, it can cause dams, blocking the water from flowing away from the home, and without anywhere else to go, the water goes into your home.
Snow build up on your roof can be very heavy, and if your roof isn't up for the task of heavy lifting, it can cause major damage.
If it is safe, after a storm, use a long rake to remove some snow from your roof.
Though these are just a few of the types of damage that can happen to your Cranston home this winter, it's very important for you to be ready for whatever happens, like us here at SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island.
