September is National Preparedness month Be prepared for whatever happens!

Here at SERVPRO, we always encourage everyone to be ready for whatever happens, whether you're a business owner, property manager, home owner, or renter, you should always be prepared.

September is National Preparedness Month. Each week there is a theme for you to follow along with and get prepared!

Week 1: Make a plan

The week of September 1st-5th, make a plan!! Everyone living in the household might not be together when disaster strikes, have a communication plan in place as well!

Put a plan together addressing these questions:

- How will we receive emergency alerts?

- What is our shelter plan?

- What is our evacuation route?

- What is the family communication plan?

- Does the preparedness kit need to be updated?

Be sure to consider any special needs

Be sure to consider any specific needs within the household. Discuss needs, special care, medical equipment etc.

- Elderly and infants (and younger children)

- Dietary needs

- Medical needs (prescriptions, medical equipment)

- Language barriers

- Religious or cultural needs

- Pets

Make an emergency plan

You can find a template here

Practice your plan

Week 2: Make a kit

After any disaster strikes, you may need to rely on non perishable food, water, and other supplies to last a few days.

Your kit should have

- Enough water for at least 3 days, per person

- Non perishable food (enough for 3 days per person)

- Battery powered radio

- Flashlight

- Batteries

- First aid kit

- Manual can opener

- Extra cellphone or wireless charger for your phone

Week 3

Take week 3 to read up and do some research on hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters that can happen in your area. Prepare your home for any disasters that may strike, or are in the forecast.

Trim your shrubs and trees around your property, secure and clean out gutters, have a generator if you are in an area that typically loses power or is expected to lose power.

Week 4

Teach your kids or any children in your life about disasters! Disasters happen anywhere, any time, so educating children on what to do if nobody is home or around is imperative!
