Hurricane Isaias | Will it make it to Providence Rhode Island?

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

Whether or not we do get impacted by Hurricane Isaias, it's a good time to prepare an emergency kit, or go through yours to be sure nothing is spoiled, and ensure all batteries work!

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), The best time to prepare for a hurricane is before hurricane season begins which is June 1. But if you haven't already, you can always do it now!

Hurricanes

Although we may not experience hurricanes like our southern coastal states do, we typically see the remnants of them.

Listen for emergency alerts, most smartphones have a system already ready to send alerts.

Do NOT walk or drive through flooded streets. Just 1 foot of water can push your vehicle away!

Wind from hurricanes can easily reach 200 MPH and cause damage to buildings and vehicles.

Emergency Kit

What should be in your emergency kit:

  • Water (enough for 1 gallon per person (and pet) to last 3 days)
  • Food (enough for each person for 3 days)
  • Battery powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlights
  • First aid kit
  • Garbage bags
  • Can opener
  • Cell phones with backup battery
  • Prescription medications
  • Non-prescription medications (pain relievers...)
  • Pet food
  • Clothing and bedding
  • Copies of important documents
  • Feminine supplies and other personal hygiene items
  • Pen and pads
  • Books and games for the kids (and you!)

Hurricane Isaias

Hurricane Isaias became the second Atlantic hurricane of 2020 on the night of July 30th. It has already arrived in Puerto Rico and is on it's way to Florida and the East Coast, expected to reach us mid-week next week.

According to https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/07/31/hurricane-isaias-east-coast/

Winds up to 45 mph are expected along the Florida coast, as well as dangerous rip currents in the ocean, and heavy rainfall.

As Isaias heads north to the Carolina's, it is expected to remain a hurricane. It's hard to determine now how strong the storm will still be by next week, this depends on the track it follows. It's not yet definitely determined if Hurricane Isaias will make it's way to Rhode Island, but it's a possibility, so it's best for you to prepare now just in case we get heavy rains and strong winds.

At SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, we're ready for whatever happens, so if you experience any storm, flood, or wind damage, give us a call at 401-949-9955. We're here 24/7 for you!!
