Four General Categories of Biohazardous Waste

7/14/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know? According to The University of Tennessee-Knoxville, there are four general categories of biohazardous wastes based on the physical form of the waste. Included are:

Solid Biohazardous Waste (Non-Sharps)

  • In the research lab or field environment, this includes any non-sharp items that is contaminated with human or animal diagnostic specimen material.

Liquid Biohazardous Waste

  • Included are bulk quantities of blood, blood products, and body fluids from human and animal research contaminated culture media.

Biohazardous Sharps

  • Any device that is sharp enough to puncture the skin and that is contaminated with a biological material that is an infectious disease or environmental release risk.

Pathological Waste

  • Included are all unfixed human organs, tissues, and body parts except for teeth.

No matter the form, no singular type should be left untreated and unsecured in areas that are accessible to the public. SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island would like YOU and other members of the community to be safe and aware of the consequences surrounding biohazardous waste(s). If you have any questions, or would like to contact a representative with an inquiry regarding biohazardous cleanup, please give us a call at (401) 949-9955 or visit our website.
