April showers bring May flowers...or water damage
4/1/2020 (Permalink)
As the saying goes "April showers bring May flowers."
But when the showers get a little too intense, it can cause flooding, and storms can be intense.
According to the Providence Journal, it rained for 23 days last April in Rhode Island.
When there is heavy rainfall in the forecast, this could mean floods are possible.
Flooding
What is flooding?
According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory:
"Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts too fast, or when dams or levees break. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop."
Since we're in April, we'll discuss how flooding can occur with just a few inches of water, from those April showers.
"Flooding occurs in every U.S. state and territory, and is a threat experienced anywhere in the world that receives rain."
Flash flood
Flash flooding occurs in an instant within hours of heavy rains. If you experience heavy rains, this is a sign that flooding may occur.
Flash flood watch
These are issued when conditions are favorable for flash flooding. This gives you time to think about a plan of action before any flooding actually occurs.
Flash flood warning
This is issued when flash flooding is happening or is likely to happen soon. Warnings are usually more concentrated on specific areas due to excessive rain.
Flash flood emergency
These are typically rare, when extremely heavy rain can lead to catastrophic damage.
